The use of strong oxidants such as chlorine, chloramines and ozone to disinfect drinking water has virtually eliminated waterborne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and dysentery in developed countries. However, research has shown that chlorine interacts with natural organic matter present in drinking water supplies to form disinfection by-products (DBPs).
